Once upon a time…
June 11, 1988: NZ 54, Wales 9 at Eden Park, Auckland
The All Blacks were limited to eight tries this time – Kirwan managed only two – and the most popular score was by a Welshman, mercurial first five-eighth Jonathan Davies. After Wales counter attacked from in front of their posts with four minutes to play, Davies outpaced wing Terry Wright to score by the uprights.
Back in 1988, the Auckland Welsh Club rallied the support of the local Welsh community to boost the morale of the touring Welsh Rugby team as they faced off against the All Blacks at Eden Park. Despite an inspirational effort, Wales lost to the All Blacks.
This was the start of a community, united in song, coming together to support one another and to provide to the wider community through performing charitable concerts.
In 1999 the choir was re-established separately as the Auckland Welsh Choir, continuing its mission to keep Welsh music alive in New Zealand. Diana Williams Rhodes was invited to become Musical Director and under her leadership and with the subsequent appointment of Associate Director Steven Rapana, the performance repertoire broadened and vocal talent was strengthened as choir membership grew. Over the following years tours were undertaken to Timaru, Christchurch, Kapiti, Levin, Paeroa, Rotorua, Tauranga, Wellington and Whangarei.
In 2006 the choir was registered as a charitable organisation, cementing its commitment to support good causes in conjunction with continuing the tradition of Welsh choral music in New Zealand.
With Steven Rapana having left in 2014 to further his music overseas, the choir remained under the guidance of Diana Rhodes and began to incorporate a broader repertoire of Celtic and religious music.
Our next big change came in 2020, with the return of Steven and beginning a time of transition for our musical directorship. As Covid spread to Aotearoa, the simple act of people coming together to sing or enjoy concerts was wiped from our daily lives. With many rehearsals held on Zoom and eventually under the protection of the weather at the band rotunda in One Tree Hill Domain before we could gather again at our regular rehearsal venue, we have come out the other side for a fresh start, and with a new name, Vocālis!
